Meteora and then Albania

So we arrived in Mtteora at a rather swanky hotel with a great looking pool and headed out to get some lunch. Had some more amazing Greek cuisine and then headed back to the hotel as we were scheduled to visit the Meteora Monsateries.

After a very long and winding drive we arrived at these amazing monasteries. There used to be more but there are only about half a doz left. There was a museum etc which housed manuscripts from as early as the 11th century and also an amazing church. I felt more "spiritual" in this church than I did at the Sistine chapel. I personally liked the artwork in the Meteora ceiling more, but no photos allowed people!

We headed back down from the monastery (only 618 steps to get up and down from the monastery) and then jumped into the pool. Until it went form 30+ degree heat to thunder and lightning.

The air con in the room more circulated the air than anything else so that was great.... Dinner here was pretty good to be fair and then we went out for frozen yoghurt / Ice cream for dessert. One of the nicest locals we have encountered was working at the yoghurt place. It was lovely.

The next morning we were on our bikes again to head to Albania. After a walking / bus tour around the city we headed to the Hotel. Where we all stayed the entire night. Albania (Tirana) didn''t really appeal as something that I needed to go and explore. Besides the beers at the hotel were 1.8 Euro and the vodkas weren't much more. Gotta love free pouring!

All in all I dont think I need to go back to Albania, I am sure there was something I may have missed (I didnt get a bag patch!) But hey still had a great night chilling round the pool having a few drinks!

Oh sh*t. And I used a bidet. That was a life changing experience.

Athens...

What can I say. Athens was great.

We had one day here. Now I am sure you can do a lot of things but we hit the main sites theat we wanted to in one day.

We walked through Hadrians arch down to the temple of Zeus and then to the old Olympic stadium. The temple of Zeus was part of a "pass" bjt didnt include the stadium. You can see the stadium pretty well from the outside so we didnt pay the extra to go in.

From here we headed back up toward tbw acropolis and the Parthenon.  What and incredible building.  The walk up is a bit of a mission but it's not terrible. You go past the Dionysys theatre and a number of other archeological sites. Long story short. It was amazing. The view from the top of the acropolis is well worth the walk if the Parthenon up close wasnt enough for you.

We then had some Gyros at a place by the metro station. Hopped the metro back to the hotel for a couple of drinks and a swim after the massive heat of Greece tried to melt my shoes off and kill me through dehydration.

We woke up the next morning after a actual quiet night and headed to Meteora which I will cover a bit later.

Trying to do posts between having fun and average wifi is always good.

Venice to Athens. Im on a boat!

Right o then. What a busy past week. To all those playing at home, sorry it has taken a while for this update, it will be a lengthy one!

So after finally going to sleep in Venice after much pool fun we awoke to leave for Florence. On the way to Florence we stopped by Pisa. The leaing tower definitely has a lean on, but to be fair the only reason it is impressive is because it is leaning. The church that is right next door to it was better to see for me than the tower itself.

In any case we travelled some more to Florence and got off the bus right into a walking tour. We went around Flroence and saw the sites. The cathedral is pretty amazing and the giant dome looked awesome. We rocked past the reproduction statue of David and a bunch of other smazing sculptures.

After the walking tour and taking in some great sites we stopped at a leather shop and got a run down on the history of leather manufacturing in the region. After all that we headed back to the hostel to sit down for an amazing dinner followed by another night of bucket cocktails, this time with Karaoke thrown in. As well as many people thrown into the pool. Including myself after being betrayed.

The next morning was a free morning. I decided to go and suss out a local market which was great. Had an amaing espresso and got some good bargains. After that we jumped back on the bus bound for Rome and a 3 hour walking tour!

The walking tour went past the Spanish steps, Trevi fountain, the Pantheon, the Roman forum, and ended with  group picture at the Colosseum. Wow. Rome is amazing. After a great feed of pizza and gelato we headed back to the hostel. Had a couple of drinks at the bar and then crashed for the night.

Next morning we got dropped into Rome to go on a tour of the Vatican. The amount of artwork and sculpture that is on display there is unbelievable. Pilfered and donated over time. The Sistine Chapel was a site to behold. So much so that while in it i said this is f*cking amazing... Woops.

After the Vatican tour we were lucky enough to see Frank himself giving an adress. My new camera is amazing and actually managed to snap a pic of him. Then we decided to walk to the Colosseum so we could go inside. We went via a place that I forget the name of that houses the tomb of the unknown warrior. But the view from the rooftop was sectacular.

Onwarrrds to the Colosseum. Never in my life have I felt so much energy. The place was electrifying and humbling all in the same breath. What an amazing piece of history. The photos I took do not do it justice. You have to be there to feel it's presence.

From the Coloseum we tried to get a taxi as the trains were on strike. They wanted way to much money so we caught the train that was running to the transfer station. And then got stuck, and had to get  cab anyway. But this one was more reasonable. Always easier when you are splitting anyway.

Back to the Hostel, more pool time, and then the Beauty and the Geek themed party night, also Erin's birthday. A bunch of the guys dressed up in dresses, including myself, I looked fab. I went to bed relatively early as we had an early start the next day but some people my have partied a bit to hard. The next morning was a mess. I was taking bets to see how many peeople would get left behind. Remarkably noone did.

Onward to the Ferry and Greece! First time overnight on a boat so that was something new. It was all pretty chiled. Took some snaps off the back of the boat at sunset which turned out pretty good and then had a massive catch up sleep.

After the ferry which had amazing kebabs or Gyros as they called them we headed to Athens. This was only an "Airport stop" so we didn't go out exploring as we were coming back. I did however manage an amazing picture of the Parthenon at night from the rooftop of the hotel. Can't wait to go and see it, so much I need to do in Athens.

We woke the next morning to get on the bus, drive to the docks, and get another ferry to Mykanos. Some peoples sea legs are a bit weak so they didn't really have a great time of it. But that all changed when everyone saw Mykanos. What a place.

The driving here is insane. There might be some rules but I am yet to see them. After an interesting bus ride we arrived at Paraga beach which was to be our home for 3 nights of relaxation. We spent sme time in the pool and then had a great meal before heding out.

The first night a few of us headed into town to experience Mykanos nightlife. It's much the same as other nightlife (no I don't normally do the clubbing thing) so I bailed a bit earlier than the others.

After a good nights rest I woke up hell bent on hiring a quad bike and did just that. If you are going to Mykanos, you need to do it. Riding around Mykanos is amazing. But for the love of god get a helmet. And don't drink and ride.

In any case I took my newly rented quad to Mykanos town for a look, had a look around, some amazing Souvlaki Pitas, and then headed back to the hostel. Met up with a few people, chilled for a bit, then headed out for a lengthier ride before dinner. So some great places and took some photos then headed back. Dinner was pretty good being that it came from the same place that was doing entirely average breakfasts.

After dinner we headed out again for a bit of a night ride. I had a passennger with a GoPro so I can't wait to see that footage that will be awesome! Few more drinks and getting to know the new 6 people that joined us in Athens a bit and then called it.

The next day I had decided that nude beach going was a must and after a lengthy time in the pool we myself and 2 others headed down and experienced the beach the way the locals do. Thank god for sunscreen.

Really just had a chilled out day followed by an amazing dinner with some great people (Mousakka and Shrimps) and headed to bed with the aim of waking up early to get some snaps of the sunrise. Totally worth it.

I guess that leads me to where I am writing this blog post. Somewhere between Mykanos and Athens on another ferry for about 3.5 more hours.

Will try and get the blog updated a bit more, will do some pics later as the upload speed here is poor. Be good everyone!

A couple of wheres Rangi?!?

Barcelona, Nice, Cannes, Monaco, Verona, Venice - I've bewn busy!

Right so where to start....

The 2nd night in Barcelona we went andbhad tapas for dinner. Chilled with a Sangria at the hostel. Went for gelato. Then called it a night. The next day we left Barcelona for Nice.

Nice was quite a cool little city. We arrived. Went for dinner. Then ended up dancing on tables at Waynes bar. Highly recommend it if you find yourself there.  The next day everyone had a bit of a mix of what they wanted to do. I headed over to Cannes in the morning then that evening we booked it to Monaco. On the way to the bus I got shat on by a bird so that went well. Had a look around the palace. Flag was up so the royals were home.

And then the Grand Casino.  What a place. Inside thw building is amazing. Outside the sports cars are plentiful. Ordered a 90euro bottle of champagne.  And then went to the blackjack table. Won 190 Euros. Then called it.

Dinner time. After asking one of the restaurants if they could seat us and being told no we decided there wasnt enough time for a sit down meal so found McDonalds. Royale with cheese. Yum. And also apparently it was my shout for mcflurrys.

Back to the hostel and bed. Good decision. Cue bus ride to Venice via Verona. Verona was pretty cool. Grabbed boob at Giulietta's statue which is near her balcony. After that. More gelato then bus to Venice.

Our accommodation in Venice is great. With another topdeck meal tentbwith an amazing dinner of pasta and gnocchi. There is a massive pool and a great bar. Watched the UEFA Champions league final. Go Barcelona! After some bucket cocktails and some normal ones headed to bed with Venice to see in the am.

Another great brekky from topdeck. And then on the bus to Venice. Walked to St Marco Square and had a squiz. Went to a Venetian lace school which was cool. And then we went on a gondola ride. After the ride I had some cuttlefish pasta with black sauce which was delish. Caught the boat back to the bus and then more gelato. I sense a theme.

Back in the pool for the arvo and then here I am typing. Having such a good time. I can't recommend doing this enough.

Alps to Barcelona

So after my last post a wee bit has happened. We had another wonderful dinner provided by the top deck crew. Had some quiet drinks which resulted in a 2am bed time (they weren't really quiet)

The drive from the Alps to Avignon was great. The scenery is very similar to home, but with more windmills. We arrived in Avignon in the early evening and had some free time. After wandering around this fantasticly preserved medieval city we bought some food and had an amazing picnic. The picnic turned into drinks, and then the drinks turned into a game of "Never have I ever". Turns out I am not the only guy to have worn a dress and heels so that makes life easier.

The night ws a pretty early one as we had another big drive to Barcelona the next day. On the way from Avignon to Barcelona we stopped by some random bridge. Pont du Gard? Apparently it is a 2000+ year old Roman aquaduct. Who knew ;)

From Pont du Gard we headed to Barcelona. The city is fun and bustling, but none of the arcitecture really does it for me. After doing our washing and then creating a drying room in the room using the ceiling tiles we headed out to dinner.

Dinner was a Seafood /chicken Paella. I thought it was pretty good. A few people didn't enjoy it. But the Sangria here. Wow. Potent stuff! After dinner we headed to a Flamenco show which was really great. Always cool to see traditional dance!

We left from here to a bar not far away and had a couple with our amazing Tour Leader and Bus Driver, Michelle and Gaz.

On the walk home we may have walked a bit to far and had to ask for directions. But got back to the hostel in one piece.

After a generous sleep woke up, had some breakfast and then headed out into Barcelona. Day started out with walking down La Rambla checking out some shops. Most of the labelled stuff is comparable to prices back home so far and I haven't seen much I liked. I did pick up a knock off Barcelona FC shirt because WE WENT TO THE STADIUM!

Camp Nou was amazing. We did the full tour which went through the stadium, the museum, the changing rooms, the media area, prettty much the whole thing. So glad that we did it.

After getting back everyone was prepping to get a feed and then head to the beach. We had some Tapas not far from the hostel and they were amazing. What a good way to eat.

After tapas we headed back down La Rambla and went to the beach. Now the beaches here are great. Topless sunbathing is prevalent. Guys selling drinks, guys selling blankets, women doing hair braiding, and woman doing massage. Until they get arrested...

Back at the hostel now. Nothing set in stone for tonight so I guess we will see what everyone else is up to. Tomorrow we jump on the bus again to get to the French Reviera. PS, Rangi has been up to some shenanigans!
